Near Dormans, France, July 15, 1918, "He was conspicuous for gallantry in action when with courage and forcefulness and without regard for his personal safety, he voluntarily organized detachments of units other than his own and led them into effective combat."
Also awarded the Silver Star. the Legion of Honor, Chevalier (France), and the Croix de Guerre with palm (France) for his service in WW1.
Also served in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine insurrection.
