In 1925, her father became Japan's ambassador to the United States and Setsuko attended the Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC from 1925 through 1928.
Upon the Matsudaira family's return to Japan, the Empress Sadako chose Setsuko to marry her second son, Prince Chichibu. She married the Prince on Sept. 28, 1928. They had no children.
After her husband's early death from tuberculosis, Princess Chichibu became president of the Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis, honorary president of the Britain-Japan Society and of the Sweden-Japan Society, and an honorary vice president of the Japan Red Cross.
During her lifetime, she made several semi-official visits to Great Britain and Sweden. King Gustav IV Adolph of Sweden invested her with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Seraphim on 8 April 1969. On 23 July 1962, she became an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire. On 9 October 1978, HRH the Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowden (on behalf of the Queen) invested Princess Chichibu as an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint John.
Princess Chichibu died of heart failure in 1995. After her passing, her memoirs appeared in English under the title "The Silver Drum: an Imperial Memoir."
