Thirty-four years. The memories still remain, both good and bad, some a little cloudy. You tried to instill the skills and abilities needed. In doing so, you gave the ultimate sacrifice. May you rest in peace. To those of the future who may read this: know that this man placed others above himself and in doing so gave the ultimate sacrifice. D 4/503, 173rd Airborne. Mike Masters.

Army friend: SSG Best was a soldier's soldier. I served under him for a few months when he returned to Nam for a second tour. Sgt Best immediately commanded your respect and there was no BS about him or anything he told you to do. His soldiers loved him because they knew that despite his sometimes gruff exterior he was always looking out for their welfare. He was the best platoon sergeant I served under in Nam. I was very disappointed to hear from a friend that he was killed along with many others when the platoon was ambushed. SSG Best will never be forgotten, there were not enough sergeants like him in the Army. Frank Denryter, 18682 Thomasine, Clinton Township, Mississippi, 48036.

Sgt Best, I honor you, and all the others that fell that day, with memory and tears. You will never be forgotten. Those of us that served with you will always remember. Always. Forever and always Airborne, Doc Turner, platoon medic, Delta Co, 4th Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade, Doc Turner.

To a Great Man and Hero. He is my Grandfather. I never got the chance to know you but I will always love you in my heart. Keith Best, 4250 Welbron Drive, Decatur Ga. 30035, Dekalb.

I was with him the day he died. I still remember the journey to the valley. He was one hell of a man. He died a hero and will always be a hero to me. I was a medic with our company when we went into the Soui Ca that day. George Fowble, 17 East Ruth Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85020.

I am his Son: I would like to meet and talk to my extended family. I meet Sherri Best in the early 180's. Please contact me if you know how I can reach my half brothers and sisters. Thanks. Kenn Spell. 9965 West Tonopah Drive, Peoria, AZ.

He is the Son of Mr Lewis Best and Mrs Rosa Branch Shiver Best.

He served with Delta Company, 4th Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, "The Rock", 173rd Infantry Brigade, USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, The Army Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
