SSG Arthur Best was a member of the Army, SSG Best served our country until April 3rd, 1971 in Kontum, South Vietnam. He was 39 years old and was married. It was reported that Arthur died from an undetermined explosion. His body was recovered. SSG Best is on panel 04W, line 102 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.
Thirty-four years. The memories still remain, both good and bad, some a little cloudy. You tried to instill the skills and abilities needed. In doing so, you gave the ultimate sacrifice. Army friend: SSG Best was a soldier's soldier. I served under him for a few months when he returned to Nam for a second tour. Sgt Best immediately commanded your respect and there was no BS about him or anything he told you to do. His soldiers loved him because they knew that despite his sometimes gruff exterior he was always looking out for their welfare. He was the best platoon sergeant I served under in Nam. I was very disappointed to hear from a friend that he was killed along with many others when the platoon was ambushed.
