Longtime Bailey-area resident and former Flume editor Lora Abcarian died Nov. 1, 2016 after a short but fierce battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Berkeley, Calif. on Aug. 31, 1949, to Gilbert and Raisa Abcarian, Lora was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by brothers Mike (wife Melissa) of Dallas and Steve of Tallahassee. She is also survived by nephews Ryan, Alan and Scott, as well as aunts, uncles and cousins in southern California and the San Francisco Bay area.

In addition, Abcarian is survived by her extended “family” of friends and colleagues across the country.

A career journalist who was an active voice in the community and an Independent candidate for Park County commissioner in 2008, Abcarian began as the staff writer for The Flume in 2000 and moved into the editor’s position in 2002. She left the weekly in March 2006 to take a full-time position with The Produce News, a produce trade publication published in New Jersey, as editor-at-large. She also served as Northwest editor, and she held the position of Western editor for that newspaper.

She pursued her passion for photojournalism after graduating from Bowling Green High School in Ohio in 1967, then earning her bachelor’s degree in English at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla., in 1971 and a master’s degree in communications from FSU the following year.

While still in Florida, Abcarian interned in the State House of Representatives, where she became familiar with political protocol.

In addition to her position on The Flume staff and with The Produce News, Abcarian worked as a professional photographer, owning Shadow Catcher Photography in Bailey. She was also a freelance reporter for Mountain Connection for two and a half years.

Abcarian started writing for The Produce News on a freelance basis in 2004, and Editor-Publisher John Groh said, “Her clean style and attention to detail quickly made her a favorite of the copy editors at the main office of The Produce News.”

At her request, no services were held. Lora was a lover of animals, including her “girls,” Cali and Izzy. Family and friends suggest donations in her memory be made to Intermountain Humane Society, P.O. Box 1250, Conifer, CO 80433.
