Betty Jean Gutmann, 66, of Ashland, IL died Sunday, November 27, 2016, at her residence.

She was born March 29, 1950 in Petersburg, IL, the daughter of Ed and Anna Mae Hohimer Gleason. She married John Gutmann on June 29, 1974 in Petersburg and he survives.

She is also survived by a son, Nathan Gutmann (wife, Heather) of Springfield; three grandchildren, William Gutmann, Anna Smith, and Julia Smith; two siblings, Paul Gleason (wife, Gianna) and Ruth Otto (husband, Harry), all of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, William Gleason, Fred Gleason, and Patricia Peyton.

Betty was a 1968 graduate of Petersburg High School and later received her associates degree from Lincoln Land Community College. She was employed at the Illinois Department of Transportation for several years and later worked for 10 years at the Venture retail store in Springfield.

Her profound love of all animals led her to volunteer her time at the Henson-Robinson Zoo in Springfield. She was also an EMT serving with the Ashland First Responders. She loved attending her son’s athletic events and family genealogy research.

Cremation has been accorded. The family will host a memorial celebration of life from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, Saturday, December 3, 2016, at the former Extra Innings Sports Bar, 124 N. Yates, Ashland, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Villalobos Rescue Center, 4525 N. Claiborne Ave., New Orleans, LA 70117. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of the cremation arrangements.
