14 December 1867:
FROZEN TO DEATH
On Friday afternoon last, an old citizen of Darlington County, Nathaniel Odom, died under the following circumstances: Mr. Odom lived not far from town, had been drinking liquor on Thursday afternoon, and on trying to reach his home got lost in the woods, where he wandered all night. Next morning he was found and taken care of, but was too far gone, and died as stated. His voice was heard repeatedly while he was in the woods, but the practice of shouting and screaming in the night was so common, in this instance, it was not noticed.
