Marcelo began his career in soccer under Tupi's youth categories, moving onto Macaé's youth categories in 2011 eventually graduating and professionally debuting in 2012 with Volta Redonda. He joined Chapecoense on a loan for the 2016 Season, after playing for Cianorte and Flamengo between 2014-2016. His Chapecoense team number was 13. He was a talented soccer player, having played a total of 77 games and scored 2 goals.
Marcelo was a victim of the LaMia Airlines Flight 2933 crash on November 28, 2016 over Cerro Gordo, Colombia. Marcelo and most of his Chapecoense teammates were traveling on a charter plane, from Bolivia to Colombia, to play in the 2016 Copa Sudamericana Finals against a Colombian team. At 10:00pm, the crew of the plane declared electrical and fuel emergencies while flying over Colombia, due to fuel exhaustion. The plane crashed into the mountains of Cerro Gordo moments later, killing 71 of the 77 people onboard. 19 out of 22 Chapecoense players on the plane died.
Marcelo's body was recovered and identified, and was buried at the Cemitério Municipal de Juiz de Fora in the Poço Rico neighborhood of Juiz de Fora, Minais Gerais.
