Silas Russell Whitney, who was born
in Peeksklll, Nov.8,1846, died In New
York City, suddenly suddenly, in New York City Friday, March 29th,
Mr. Whitney was the son of the late
Washington and Maria Horton Whitney,
of this village, He was educated
at the Peekskill Military Academy,
and was the first student of that
institution to be breveted captain. The
family removed to Yonkers some years
ago.
lHe Is survived by one son and three
daughters.Geoffrey Whitney, Miss
Marina Whitney and Mrs. William J.
Moore, or Yonkers. and Mrs. WTalbot Payton of
of Montreal,Canada His' wife, whose madian name was Marina Carpenter, died some years ago.
Mr. Whitney was a writer of much
ability and a frequent contributor to Ihe newspapers.
At Ihe dedication of
the Soldiers and Sailors' Monument, in Manor Hill Park, Yonkers, Sept. 17, 1891, an excellent poem, written by him especially for that occasion, was recited. It was entitled, "The Men Who Saved I ho Union."
The funeral, Which was private, was
held at 221 VV'oodworth avenue, Yonkers,
at 10 a.m. Monday, Rev. Wm.
Morris Gilbert, rector of St. Paul's
Episcopal Church, officiating, The interment
was In Peekskill, Monday
