On 25 Jul 1850, Moses Dewitt, 44 and a merchant, was residing with Catharine, 21, Miller, 13, Wm, 10, John, 9, Elizabeth, 6, and Thos. J., 4, in Saugerties, Ulster County, New York. Moses had been born in New York while the rest of the household was born in New Jersey. [1850 Federal Census]

(VI) Moses Edwards DeWitt, son of John Charles and Cornelia (Cantine) DeWitt, was born September 13, 1799, at Esopus (now Rosendale), and died January 14, 1871, at Saugerties. he ws a farmer and landowner in the beginning, and later engaged in mercantile pursuits of various kinds. His early life was spent partly at Esopus, living after his marriage also at Paterson, New Jersey, then at Saugerties, Ulster county, New York, and also in Brooklyn. He served as sheriff of Passaic county, New Jersey, and was many years a custom house officer at New York. He married (first) at Paterson, New Jersey, Salome Nottingham, having two children: Charles, of Katsbaan, Ulster county, New York, and Katherine. He married (second) September 8, 1835, at Clinton, New Jersey, Lydia Ann, daughter of John Miller, and sister of Jacob Miller, United States senator from New Jersey. Children: David Miller, mentioned below; William Cantine, born in Paterson, New Jersey, January 25, 1840, a well known lawyer residing in Brooklyn; John H., M. D., of Saugerties; Thomas; Elizabeth, who married Evert Pells, of Kingston.

     Miss Ella Field De Witt, born in Saugerties, New York. Descendant of Col. Charles De Witt, of New York. Daughter of John Henry De Witt, M. D. and Lucy M. Field, his wife. Granddaughter of Moses Edwards De Witt and Lydia Ann Miller, his wife. Gr.-granddaughter of John D. De Witt and Cornelia Cantine, his wife. Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of Charles De Witt and Blandina Du Bois, his wife.

     Charles De Witt (1727-87) was a member of the Provincial Congress, 1775 and colonel of a regiment of Minute men. He was a member of the Committee of Safety, 1777 and on the Committee to draft the state constitution. At the close of the war he was a member of the Continental Congress. He was born and died in Greenhill, N.Y.
