Edward Eli Leonard was a son of Daniel R. "Mack" Leonard (b. 1858) and Laura Ann (Sowers) Leonard.

Edward Eli Leonard would marry Mollie May on Aug. 4, 1901. She was previously married to James R. Leonard (distantly related to Edward Eli Leonard). Mollie May was the daughter of Julian "June" May and Nannie May. Mollie is believed to have been born with the name Mary E. May. This name appears (age 2) in the 1880 census of Thomasville, NC with Julian and Nancy May as parents.

Edward Eli Leonard dies in a freak automobile accident in 1919 on Holly Grove Road just yards from his wife's grave. She died Sept. 3, 1915.
