Stephen was born near Abingdon, Virgina, July 4, 1805
1828: Joined fur trader William Sublette at St. Louis and left for the ROCKY MOUNTAINS. He accompanied Joe Walker to California in 1833-1834 and in 1835 joined the Hudson's Bay Company, trapping, mostly in California, but venturing into other territories.
1835 moved to Oregon, began working at the Hudson's Bay Company's Fort Vancouver for John McLoughlin.
Returned to St. Louis 1836-1837/only to return to the Mountains.
1840: Became a Wagon Master for the Magoffin brothers to Chihuahua where he remained two years, joining scalp hunter James Kirker.
1841: Bought the first lot of the Oregon City, Oregon, townsite from John McLoughlin and helped to survey the land.
1842: Guide for a wagon party from Independence to the Columbia.
1843: Guide for a wagon party from Oregon to California.
1844: Sailed to Valparaiso, Chile, then returned to Panama and made his way to New York and on to his home in Virginia.
1845: Guide for a wagon party of 500 wagons to Fort Hall/settling with his wife(Elizabeth Schoonover)at Oregon City on the Willamette River until 1848.
***Samuel took the wagon train west through the Malheur Mountains and the Harney Valley to Wagontire Mountain where no water could be found. This was a trail where no wagons had traveled before. Turning the wagons North in an effort to escape the desert, they found life-saving water at Buck Creek and the South Fork of the Crooked River.
They also found GOLD NUGGETS.
1848: Took his family to California in time for the gold rush, dividing his attentions between California and Oregon for several years.
1867: Took wagons and mining machinery from California to Boise, Idaho.
Participated in a Shoshone Indian campaign.
