Elmer was the son of Benjamin Harrison Bryson and Ellen (Schultz) Bryson.

He married Anneta E Cole on April 7, 1915, in New Hampton, Chickasaw County, Iowa. This marriage ended in divorce in October 1917, according to a newspaper article published in the Cresco Plain Dealer on October 19, 1917.

He later married E. Katherine (Brenneisen) Young, who was divorced from Franklin Lewis Young. In the 1930 census she is living in his household but is shown as his "step-daughter."

Katie died just shy of her 44th birthday in 1913.

Elmer passed away in 1953 in a nursing home in Stacyville, Iowa, and was buried beside his wife in Riverside Cemetery.
The two step-children mentioned in his obituary are Katie's children: Florence Mae Young and Raymond Wilton Young.
