Born in East Whitburn, Scotland on Jan. 31, 1917
Departed on Dec. 4, 2006 and resided in Detroit, MI.

Alec G. Bryce, age 89, passed away as a result of sudden cardiac arrest on December 4, 2006, at his Detroit home.

Mr. Bryce was born Alexander Gilbert Bryce in East Whitburn, Scotland in 1917 and moved to the United States in 1920 with his family, settling in Pennsylvania. He was the last survivor of 11 children of Elizabeth (Russell) and Robert Bryce. His father, an experienced coal miner in Scotland, found work in the Allenport, Pennsylvania mines. Alec's mother saw the toll the mines were taking on her husband (who eventually died of black lung disease) and Alec's older brothers, and vowed no more of her children would work in that job. She and her husband made plans to move to Detroit, where auto companies offered hope of employment.

The Bryce family relocated to Detroit on "Black Tuesday" in October of 1929. Alec started working for the Ford Motor Company in 1934 after graduating from Cass Technical High School. Alec was Drum Major and a proud member of the St. Andrew's Kiltie Band as well as Drum Major for the Ford Motor Company Pipe Band. He married Josephine Conlogue on April 19, 1938 and moved to Northwest Detroit, where they both happily lived out their lives together.

Alec was a fireman for the City of Detroit for 19 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant before he retired. During that period he worked in several areas, including as an Arson Squad detective and as a member of the Rescue Squad. He took college courses by correspondence, and to supplement his income he built wooden toys, taught baton twirling lessons, roofed houses, and worked part-time with Bockstanz Brothers Cleaning Supplies selling industrial cleaning equipment and supplies to the auto companies. He was a past-President of the Detroit Fire Department Officers Club. He left the Fire Department to work full time at Bockstanz, later moving to Puritan Chemical Company as Sales Manager. Eventually he started his own business, Bryce Cleaning Supplies, from which he later retired. He was a past-President of the Greater Detroit Sanitation Suppliers Association, and won several national sales awards.

Mr. Bryce was an active member of the Salesian High School Dad's Club and was a past-President of that organization. He was also the longest standing active member in the St. Andrew's Society and had served as President for the Detroit Chapter. He recently received a commemorative award as a 60-year member of the Masonic Order.

After retiring, Mr. Bryce developed an interest in painting with oils and acrylics, and produced many beautiful renderings of Scottish homes and landscapes, which are cherished possessions of friends and family members. He also donated his paintings to various charity auctions, and they are now on display in many homes in the United States and Canada.

Alec was predeceased by his beloved wife, Josephine (March 2, 1996). He is survived by his six children: Patricia Cardellio (Dr. Jesse), Douglas (Linda), Alan (Florence), Kathleen Atkin (James), Richard (Rose), and Michael (Theresa). He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was an honorable, caring man who will be dearly missed by his family and remembered fondly by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Mr. Bryce would have celebrated his 90th birthday on January 31, 2007. A memorial service in celebration of his life is scheduled to begin at 1:00 P.M. on February 3, 2007, at the Lafayette Grande, 1 Lafayette, Pontiac, Michigan 48342.
