STARK, Susan Rhine
83, of Leona Valley, California, passed away December 25, 2006, in San Rafael, California. Susan is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. T. E. Rhine of Thornton, Arkansas. Susan was born on October 27, 1923, in Thornton and attended Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas and Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas. Her chosen profession of Occupational Therapy provided a wonderful outlet for her to work in rehabilitation of wounded World War II veterans. After working in Milwaukee and San Antonio she moved to Los Angeles, California to work at LA Veteran's Hospital and pursue a graduate degree. She met and married Milton Stark of Lancaster, California in 1948. Over the past 45 years Susan contributed in many ways to the close-knit community of Leona Valley. She served as the first editor of the local newsletter, started the original Indian Maid-
ens organization, contributed to the local 4-H clubs, Leona Valley Improvement Association and was active in the local Women's Club. Susan was a master of handwork and was proud to keep the lost art of tatting alive. She will be remembered for the warmth and kindness she shared with her many friends and family members. She is survived by her four children: Amy Elizabeth Anderson (Rob) of San Anselmo, California, Mary Stark Cardenas (Ed) of Valrico, Florida, John Milton Stark (Anne) of Paradise, Utah and Nanita Stark Maynard (Neale) of Brisbane, Australia, and her sisters, Virginia Rhine Stein (Eric) of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Patricia Rhine Brown of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Susan was a wonderful "Nama" to her ten grandchildren; they were most precious to her and a source of incredible joy. She will be sincerely missed and remembered with love by all who knew her. A graveside service was held at Oakland Cemetery in Fordyce, Arkansas on January 4, 2007. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 13, 2007, at the Leona Valley Community Church in Leona Valley, California. An online registry is at Bentonfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joanne Cayce Charities, Thornton, Arkansas or the American Cancer Society.
