He was a mail handler 11 years for the United States Postal Service, Indianapolis, Indiana retiring in 1998. Previously, he was a mechanic for McLean Trucking and a water tank builder for Universal Tank & Iron. He was a member of Eternal Life Baptist Church where he was the song leader and choir director. John was a disabled Korean War Marine Veteran. He was also preceded in death by a brother Homer Carte and sisters Elsa McIntosh and Rosalee DePalma.
Survivors include his wife Esther Jane Hess Carte; sons John Arthur, William Matthew & Mark Elliot Carte; daughter Sheila Jane Helton; brother William Howard Carte; grandchildren Tyneka Horvath, Tommy Gibson, Sarah Carte, Heather Carte, Chelsey Helton, Michael, Shawn & Kaylee Carte and 6 great-grandchildren.
