Author, Professor Esther Mae Wilkins was known as the "rock star of dental hygiene," authoring the "Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist." This textbook was often referred to fondly by students by noting the color of the edition they had studied. Founding Director of the Dental Hygiene Program at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and Clinical Professor at Tufts where she had received her dental degree at a time when few women were dentists. She taught courses in the department of periodontology and had a particular interest in preventive care.
