Mercer Sellman 1979 p 72.Alexander served as a private during the Civil War with the 135th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry, Company A. He enrolled on August 7, 1862 and was mustered in on August 14 in Harrisburg, PA. The regiment then moved to Washington, DC on August 19, 1862. They were attached to the Military District of Washington, DC and served provost duty until February, 1863. After February, the regiment joined the Army of the Potomac for duty at Falmouth and Belle Plains, VA until April 27, 1863.

Alexander was one of 37 enlisted men that the Regiment lost to disease. He died of typhoid fever.

After Alexander's death, the 135th Regiment participated in the Chancellorsville Campaign April 27 - May 6, operations at Pollock's Mill Creek April 29 - May 2, Fitzhugh's Crossing April 29- 30, and the Battle of Chancellorsville May 2-5. The Regiment mustered out on May 24, 1863.
