William F. 'Bill' Chism died Dec. 10, 1993, as a result of a tragic accident at Yager Creek at the age of 44.
A life long resident of Fortuna, Bill was born July 26, 1949, in Scotia.
Bill attended Toddy Thomas Elementary and Fortuna High, graduating with the Fortuna Union High Class of 1967. He had worked in the timber industry most of his life, working the last 16 years for the Pacific Lumber Co.
Bill had been a member of the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department for the last 17 years. He was a coach for the Fortuna Little League Indians, a Fortuna minor league coach and an assistant coach for the Eel River Valley Youth Football. He participated in and supported Fortuna 4-H and the Fortuna Elementary P.T.A.
Bill was very proud of his children. He supported and guided them throughout all of their endeavors. He enjoyed watching them, whether it be cheerleading, playing softball, football, baseball, basketball or soccer.
He enjoyed golfing, and was a member of the Redwood Empire Golf and Country Club. Bill loved to spend his free time hunting, fishing and ranching.
He was a loving husband and father. He is survived by this wife of 22 years, Rita Chism of Fortuna; his daughter, Julie, and his son, Jeff, both of Fortuna; his parents, Don and Evelyn Chism of Fortuna; three brothers, Dennis Chism and his wife, Eileen, of Fields Landing, David Chism and his wife, Sharon, of Fortuna and Chis Chism of San Francisco; a sister and her husband, Betty and Lester Phelps of Fortuna; his mother-in-law, Jessie Goodner of Fortuna; a brother-in-law and his wife,Ralph and Sherri Goodner of Fortuna; two nephews, Travis Phelps and Jesse Bice; eight nieces, Marc Chism, Kristi Chism, Jennie Chism, Jennifer Bice, Cassie Chism, Kasie Goodner, Karie Goodner and Kalie Goodner.
He was preceded in death by a nephew, Barry Phelps, and his father-in-law, Charles Goodner. Friends are invited to attend services at Goble's Chapel in Fortuna on Wednesday, Dec. 15,1993, at 11 a.m. Father David Stenner will officiate.
Private interment will follow. Honorary bearers will be Galen Frey, Gene Reback, Wes Coliver, Gary Ogden, Garth Cassacca, Ronnie Lake and David Frye.
Arrangements are under the direction of Goble's Chapel n Fortuna where friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers and to promote Bill's interest in youth and local youth athletics, the family has asked that memorial contributions to be made to the Bill Chism Memorial Fund, c/o U.S. Bank, 11th and L streets, Fortuna 95540.
