John Jacob Trueb, born as Johann Jakob Trueb in Uetikon Switzerland, was a chocolate maker. He studied candy making in Austria and moved his wife and two sons to Dartmouth Nova Scotia in 1899 to take a job as the head of candy making for Mott's Spice and Chocolate Company. He opened his own shop in Halifax, Trueb's Confectionary, and operated that until the Halifax Explosion in Halifax Harbor. In 1919 he and his wife Ida moved to Gresham, Oregon to a small farm where Mt. Hood Community is now located. After a couple of years here they retired to Portland Oregon and purchased a home just off of 47th and SE Lincoln Street. John left Ida in 1923 and they divorced. He traveled back to Switzerland and then returned to Canada. He was hit by a bus in Vancouver B.C. and died alone. His son Jake saw his name in the paper and he and his brother Paul took care of having him buried.
