Scott Owen Banks, 52, of Mansfield, tragically passed away while helping a stranded motorist in Wood County, West Virginia, on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Although his family mourns his death, they know Scott was doing exactly what he thought was right. Born January 18, 1964, in Mansfield, Ohio, he was destined to live a life helping others.

Scott graduated in 1983 from Lucas High School and Pioneer Career and Technology Center. He spent the majority of his working career as a truck driver and worked at Anderson’s Repair for a number of years. He was currently employed at Cowen Truck Line. Scott took every opportunity to help out others and touched the lives of many stranded motorists throughout his career. He would never leave someone stranded or alone and was an angel to those he helped. He felt it was his duty to protect others.

He protected no others more fiercely than his own family and he enjoyed being the “boss or supervisor” of them. Selfish was not a familiar word to Scott and he gave of himself freely to family or strangers alike. His grandchildren were the joy of his life and he relished every moment in their company. Scott was a people person and enjoyed spending time with family, friends, neighbors, or someone he just met. He simply loved being around people and helping out wherever he could. Hunting and camping were favorite activities and you could find his radio tuned to the nearest country music station wherever he traveled.

There was, and never will be, any other man who embodies love, protection, and care for others as Scott did. It was simply who he was. He touched many lives in ways that can never be adequately expressed. His memory will be treasured and his legacy will live on in the lives of everyone who knew him. His way of living taught us all that our decisions have an impact on the lives of so many in ways which can never fully be explained.

Scott is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Sandy Callahan Banks; two beloved sons, Christopher Banks and Michael Banks; two adorable grandchildren, Vivian and Jacob Banks; father, Larry D. Banks; five siblings and friends, Deb Banks, Greg Banks, Terry Banks, John Banks, and Melissa (Buster) Cyrus; numerous nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; father-in-law, James Callahan; and brother-in-law, Larry (Lynn) Callahan.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Martha Ann Banks; and mother-in-law, Donna Callahan.

The family welcomes friends to visit from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. The funeral service conducted by Pastor Ron Smals will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
