Note: Maj, US Army - Vietnam Gary was born in Richland Missouri on June 13, 1938 He graduated from Richland High school in May 1956.He was on the editing staff of the "Richlander"that year.He was an active and popular student.He was a "Future Farmer of America"and a member of the Parliamentary Procedure Team.He was also a member of the Richland High School Band, Chorus,Mixed Quartet and Drama class besides all these activities, Gary was on the first string of the "A" Team of the Richland Bears Basketball team. Part of the 1956 class Prophecy read "Price Keller and Gary Powers are now basketball coaches at Drury and Bolivar Colleges" This didn't come to pass.....but their basketball team went on in their senior year to win the local and regional tournaments and was the first team in the history of Richland High to enter state competition. In the fall of 1956 Gary entered Arkansas State University where he played football and was a member of R.O.T.C. and social farternity Tau Kappa Epsilon. He graduated with a B.S. degree in Education in June 1960. Major Powers entered active duty in the U.S. Army on Sept. 4,1960 in 1965 he became a Special Agent in Army Intelligence.In 1969 Gary was ranked amongst the Top Ten Majors in the U.S. Army. His overseas tours of duty included Korea,Okinawa and the Republic of Viet Nam.
