Davenport Morning Tribune, May 18, 1890, Davenport, Iowa. Obituary.

William Russell.

Another of Scott county's old settlers has crossed the dark river and entered the land from whence no traveler can returneth. Yesterday morning at a few minutes before 11 o'clock William Russell, aged 86 years, died at the residence of this niece, Mrs. Thomas Parry, at Oakdale cemetery. Mr. Russell was born in Coventry, England, Nov 4, 1804, and came to the United States in 1845, settling in New York. In 1847 he removed to Callicoon, Sullivan county, NY, where he began farming, having purchased a large tract of land there. In 1879 he returned to Scott county where he has lived ever since. He was twice married, the last time, in 1840, to Miss Rebecca Flemming [[this was Rebecca's mother]], who, whith five children, William, of Oregon City, Oregon; Edward, of Minneapolis; Tom. Of Bedford, Taylor county, Iowa; Thomas [[this should be Josiah]], and Mrs. Burnham [[this is Rebecca]] of Passadena (sic), Cal, survive him. Mrs. Burnham, is the only daughter.

For years Mr. Russell has been an invalid, and, while his death is very sad, yet he passed the usual time allotted to man, three score years and ten. He was a man of strong feeling and always a staunch Republican. He was a kind and loving father, a friend to the sorry and needy. In support of his views he has recently written a number of articles for the TRIBUNE and we had hoped that they would be continued. He was a trenchant writer and fearlessly expressed his views. In him Scott county losses a most valued citizen, an earnest and upright gentleman. He was a consistent member of the Congregational church. The funeral will take place Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. A. W. Archibald, pastor of the Edward's Congregational church. Mr. Edward Russell [[son of William]] will come here Monday morning. The wife of the deceased [[Rebecca Flemming Russell]] is very old, nearly, or quite 90, and to her the blow has been very painful and it is with difficulty that she can be made to realize the great sorrow which has befallen her.
