She took acting lessons from Rene Simon while serving as an extra in various films to pay for them. She received her first major role in the 1937 film "Gribouille" after her beauty was noticed by director Marc Allegret. She went on to appear in both "Le Quai des brumes" (1938) and "Remorques" (1941), which made her one of the leading actresses of French cinema of that time. After the German invasion of France in 1940, she went to America and continued acting in various films including "Joan of Paris" (1942), "Higher and Higher" (1943), and "Passage to Marseille" (1944). After the war, she went back to France and resumed her acting career, appearing in such films as "La Symphonie Pastorale" (1946), "The Fallen Idol" (1948), "Fabiola" (1949), "The Proud and the Beautiful" (1953), "Les Grandes Manœuvres" (1955), and "Marie-Antoinette reine de France" (1956). She continued acting into the 1960s, but by the 1970s, had retired from the acting profession. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to the motion picture industry. She also was awarded various honors for her contributions to French cinema.
