Actress. Born Simone Renee Roussel, she was one of France's most popular leading ladies in film for five decades. She left home at the age of 15 to go to Paris to pursue acting. She took acting lessons from Rene Simon while serving as an extra in various films to pay for them. She received her first major role in the 1937 film "Gribouille" after her beauty was noticed by director Marc Allegret. She went on to appear in both "Le Quai des brumes" (1938) and "Remorques" (1941), which made her one of the leading actresses of French cinema of that time. After the German invasion of France in 1940, she went to America and continued acting in various films including "Joan of Paris" (1942), "Higher and Higher" (1943), and "Passage to Marseille" (1944).
