William Ogg was 27, and living in Marion, Linn Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. K of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov 5, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 25, 1861. Ogg became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on Dec 19, 1863.

During his term of service, Ogg was promoted to 8th Corporal on Nov 1, 1862; to 6th Corporal on Jan 1, 1863; to 4th Corporal on May 20, 1863; to 3rd Corporal on June 22, 1863; to 2nd Corporal on Sept 1, 1863; to 1st Corporal on Jan 1, 1864; and finally to 4th Sergeant on Jan 1, 1865.

Ogg mustered out of the service on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta, along with the rest of his company.
