On November 15, 1933 in Ridgeland, South Carolina William was driving from Savannah in route to his fathers New York home, when he hit a parked truck on the highway, Vanderbilt thought the truck was moving just before impact, The crash ripped away the entire right side of his car, which was foreign and the drivers side was on the right, Vanderbilt was thrown from the car, suffering a fractured skull, his chauffeur J.W. Guffy was in the back seat, he suffered a broken leg. Erskine Gwynne who was also traveling with Vanderbilt and in the left side of the car suffered minor bruises and scrapes, Vanderbilt was rushed to the hospital and died from his injuries. Vanderbilt's body was sent to Savannah, where it was prepared and shipped to New York, interred in a private family ceremony at the Vanderbilt Mausoleum.
