Hattie was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to James and Mary Ann Ivory on October 1, 1922. She was an only child who attended school until the eighth grade when family needs required her to drop out in order to work. She was married young to Cornelius Cooks, a soldier during World War II, and bore two children, Cornelius Cooks, Jr. and Mildred Cooks-Burgermeister. After an honorable discharge from the military, Cornelius and Hattie moved from Pine Bluff, to St. Louis, Chicago and finally settled in Detroit. In 1956 they separated and Hattie returned to Arkansas where she was granted a divorce. In 1961 she decided to return to Detroit. During the trip she made a stopover in Davenport, Iowa, to visit a friend and met Tannie Green. They married two weeks later on April 1, 1961. They were both active members of the Third Missionary Baptist Church, enjoyed traveling to diverse locations and shared a life together filled with laughter and love. In 2004 Hattie was admitted to the Kahl Home and Tannie visited her twice daily until he took ill and passed away in 2005. They were together for 44 years. During her lifetime Hattie cared not only for the adults and children in working families, but also the children of those children. She will be missed by many.
