Ila June Mines Nelson passed away peacefully in her home on December 17, 2016, at the age of 95. She was the second of three daughters born to Leland Clyde Mines and Rosella Phelps Mines on June 26, 1921, in Midvale, Utah. On January 9, 1942, she married her high school sweetheart, T. Frank Nelson, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They enjoyed sixty-two very happy years together before Frank passed away in 2004, leaving a great void in her life.
Ila graduated from Granite High School in 1939 and kept in touch with her fellow students by attending their class reunions. She was employed as a telephone operator before she was married and worked as a typist at several military bases during World War II as she followed Frank to his training and duty stations in the Army Air Corps. During the fourteen months he was overseas, Ila worked at the Auerbach's Department Store in Salt Lake City. Later she worked happily with her husband at Gem Printing Company - the business they owned for 37 years.
Ila had the kind and gentle nature of a very loving person. Completely selfless, she worked tirelessly in serving others - her family, friends, and even those she didn't know. Ila did not live in the past nor did she focus on her own ailments or challenges. Her focus was on others and how they were doing. Always thinking and speaking the best of others, Ila was a very positive person.
Writing in her journal, collecting family photos, writing histories of beloved family members, and doing family history research were among Ila's main hobbies. Being quite artistic, she enjoyed tatting, tole painting, and caring for the yard. Family and friends loved to receive cards with bouquets of her tatted flowers.
She found great pleasure in being a wife to Frank and a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her children and their children. She remembered everyone's name and details of what they were doing while showering them with hugs and kisses. Vacationing together along with family gatherings on Christmas Eve, July 24th Pioneer Day, and General Conference Sunday dinners were treasured times together.
An active member of the LDS Church, Ila had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She served in numerous Church callings including Salt Lake Temple ordinance worker with Frank for eleven years; Granite Park Stake Missionary; member of the Canyon Rim Stake Young Women's Board; Young Women's president and counselor; teacher in Relief Society, Primary, and Sunday School; Relief Society counselor five times; and Cub Scout Den Mother. For many years she was the editor of ward, missionary, and Relief Society bulletins.
Frank and Ila were blessed with four children who survive them: Marci Muench (Warren), Boca Raton, Florida; Ted W. Nelson (Joan), Murray, Utah; Scott R. Nelson (Susan), Pleasanton, California; and Elizabeth Cowan (Robert), Holladay, Utah. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sisters Afton Black and Joyce Welch. As her children, it has been a great privilege to be born into the family of Frank and Ila Nelson.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 28th, at 11:00 am at the Rosecrest Ward Chapel, 3101 South 2300 East. Friends and family may call on Tuesday evening, December 27th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and from 9:30 - 10:30 am at the Church prior to the funeral services Wednesday morning.
