C. Chase Porter, 84, of Potomac Falls, a retired Navy Commander and oil executive, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease on Dec. 22, 2006. He graduated from Princeton University in 1943 with a major in chemical engineering. He immediately enlisted in the Navy and served for five years during World War II and thereafter. He attained the rank of lieutenant commander. He continued in the Navy Reserve, retiring as a commander in 1969. During these Reserve years, he was commanding officer of Navy Petroleum Reserve Units in Philadelphia and New York.

In 1948, Mr. Porter joined Socony Mobil Oil Company (now Exxon Mobil Corporation) and spent the rest of his career with that company. While with Mobil, he spent two years in Tehran, Iran. He also studied at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He retired in 1982 as vice president of wholesale lubricants and purchases. In addition to his involvement in oil industry associations, Mr. Porter was active in virtually every capacity in the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceville, N.J., engaged in various charitable endeavors, and was involved in various homeowners' associations and in governance of his golf and tennis clubs. He stayed active in tennis throughout his entire life.
Mr. Porter married Dorothy Kelley in 1953. She died in 1988. He is survived by his current wife, Mary Ann Porter, and his two daughters by his first marriage, Susan Porter Hicks of West Chester, Pa., and Kathryn Kelley Porter of Lovettsville, and three grandchildren, Erin Kelley Hicks, Emily Kelley Sherwood, and Harrison Chase Sherwood.
