Hyrum Theodore Weighall, 90, of Soda Springs, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016 at his home in Soda Springs.

Hyrum (Hy) was born September 1, 1926, in Rock Creek, Twin Falls County, Idaho, the thirteenth child of Franklin Lawrence Weighall and Agatha Inez Wells. As Hyrum put it, he was the last to come and the last to go. He grew up in Contact, Nevada, Rock Creek, and Georgetown, Idaho.

Hyrum’s mother passed away when he was four years old, and his father, when he was fourteen. He was not much older than many of his nieces and nephews, having been raised with many of them. He has been on his own since fourteen, having worked on the UC and Vineyard Ranches in Nevada with many family members while still young. He worked for a short time for the railroad until it was found out that he was too young. He and his brother, Hughie, helped his brother-in-law, Ivan Bacon, farm in Bear Lake County; then he worked on the Allen Ranch up Trail Canyon, and later, after he was married, he worked at Conda Mine, and as a ranch hand for Everett Coates, Sten Frostensen, and Darell Hallowell on the Camas Prairie, and Clarence Hollifield in Hansen, Idaho.

For over 40 years, Hyrum worked as a farm equipment mechanic for Caribou Implement, Rex’s Sales and Service, both of Soda Springs, and Valley Implement of Preston, Idaho. After retirement, he continued to work for R & R Transport, and later for Randy Hubbard Farms during the spring and fall. He didn’t know what to do when it was time to go into permanent retirement. He had worked hard since he was fourteen years old.

Hyrum served as Seaman 1st Class in the Navy during World War II. He served as watch and took care of the guns on the Purdue Victory and the U.S.S. President Jackson. He entered the service in January of 1944, and was honorably discharged in 1946. His tour of duty took him to Manila, Guam, Okinawa and Australia.

Hyrum and Ramona Hayes were married by Lester Alleman on June 6, 1947, at the home of Ramona’s parents in Georgetown. They lived immediately after their marriage in Fairfield, and later in Georgetown, Conda, Hansen and then moved to Soda Springs in 1961, where they have resided since.

Over the years, Hyrum and Ramona have enjoyed square dancing in both Twin Falls and Soda Springs; camping, hunting, visiting family and friends, serving others, and riding their Gold Wing Honda. They belonged to the Idaho Motorcycle Club of Pocatello, Idaho, and have taken many trips on their bike seeing the good ole state of Idaho. Several years they were able to travel back east to pick up semi-trucks. They also enjoyed snow machining.

Hyrum is survived by two sons, Steven Weighall of Pocatello, ID, Bruce and Dixie Weighall, Dixie Shultz of Afton, WY, two daughters, Edith and David Lillywhite of Smithfield, UT, Lana Myers of Soda Springs, ID, 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona, his son, Leonard Erwin, his parents, a son-in-law, Robert Myers; a granddaughter, Duanna Howard Brown, a great-grandson, Jeremy turner, his brothers, Luther, Ed, Ellis, Cecil, Ronald, Hughie; and his sisters, Maida, Delores, Hetta, Alpha, Elma and Clara.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 2, 2017 at the Hooper LDS Chapel in Soda Springs. Friends and family may call at the Sims Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. and on Monday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Church prior to services. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs with Military Honors.
