Carol Ann (Conover-Block) Pettainen, 55, a long-time Grays Harbor resident, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma.
Carol was born on December 27, 1951 in Aberdeen to Henry W. and Ada (Corey) Conover. She grew up in Central Park and moved to Hoquiam in 1960 where she graduated from Hoquiam High in 1970. She continued her education with an A.S. from Grays Harbor College and received her B.S. from Evergreen College in 1999.
On July 31, 1971 Carol married George H. Pettainen and he never forgot an anniversary. They were blessed with a son, Jason Pettainen and recently became grandparents to grandson, Kasey Dillon.
Carol known as "Lil Tex" was employed at the family business, Harbor Lanes in Hoquiam. She was a good bowler and belonged to a successful family team named Block's Beauties.
While continuing her education at Grays Harbor College she began working in the business office. This was the beginning of a 29 year career there where she rose through the ranks into management. In 2000, she moved to Des Moines and worked for the Seattle Community College District as Controller until the time of her death. She undeniably loved her job, and especially loved the people she worked with. Carol considered them part of her extended family and truly enjoyed their ethnic diversity.
Carol was active in numerous organizations and was elected to office many times due to her expertise and willingness to volunteer. These organizations included: BAR group for Washington Community Colleges, WPEA, WACUBO, Beta Sigma Phi and Aberdeen Eagles, Ladies Auxiliary as well as many others.
Carol had many hobbies and enjoyed many activities. With her season pass in hand, she loved to watch racing at Elma Raceway Park. She also enjoyed her own sports cars, such as her 2005 Ford Mustang. Quilting was a favorite past time and family members were often blessed with her quilts. She loved reading all books, and always had one with her. She collected many things including spoons, snow globes and clowns, especially Emmett Kelly.
She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. Carol was a force of nature and always wanted to stay busy, whether it was by working, reading, quilting, or playing with her beloved miniature dachshund Bucky. Carol is survived by her husband George H. Pettainen of Des Moines, son Jason Lee Pettainen of Olympia, grandson Kasey Dillon of Olympia, mother Ada Block of Hoquiam, mother-in-law Imogene Pettainen of Hoquiam, sisters; Norene Johnson of Hoquiam, Barb Prieto and her husband Javier of Aberdeen; Kris Bigbie and her husband James of Hoquiam; brother in law John Pettainen of Olympia, sister in law Genie Bixler and husband Jim of Anderson Island. Nieces and Nephews; Sherilyn Johnson of Kent, Tiffany Conover, Krystal Prieto, Alex Prieto, Nikki Prieto, Kelsey Bigbie and Jamie Bigbie all of Hoquiam, Patrick Pettainen and Tommy Pettainen of Montesano and special friends Kris and Ken Smith of Montesano. She is preceded in death by her father Henry W. Conover, her step-father Walter C. (Tex) Block, and her brother Richard Lowell Conover.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 15, 2007, at Immanuel Baptist Church, 4th & J St. in Hoquiam. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
