Started his military career serving as a Captain for the 14th New York Infantry. He was transferred to Co. D, 17th New York Infantry, where he was the only staff officer assigned to that unit. Later he was transferred again to the 25th New York Infantry, between May 21, 1861 and October 4, 1861. While assigned to the 25th New York Infantry he was wounded 27 May 1862 at the Battle of Hanover Court House. By March of 1865, he had risen in rank to Brig. General by brevet.

Attached to Companies F & S of the 25th New York Infantry Regiment. Colonel.

Enlisted at Halls Hill, Virginia.
