HELEN LYDIA "LYDIE" (HASTIE) WHITTLESEY was born 26 May 1843 in Rushville, Schuyler, Illinois, to William H. Hastie (1811-1894) and SUSANNA MUNSON (1819-1884). On 10 Dec 1861 she married Rush Whittier Whittlesey in McDonough County, Illinois. To them were born seven children: Harvey William, Emma Frances, Jesse Rollin "Jay", Frank Archibald, Nellie Mae, Elta and Rush Orrin. All grew to maturity except Emma who died at age 5. In the mid-1870s, the family moved to Creston, Union, Iowa. But Rush Whittier was thrown from a horse in 1880 and died at age 40. She continued to farm in Union County, Iowa, raising her family there. In her later life, she spent part of each year visiting her children in Colorado and California. At the end of her life she was living with her youngest daughter, Elta Julian, in Cromwell. She died at home on 11 April 1931 at age 87. She is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Creston, Union, Iowa, together with her husband.
