ANDREWS, MD, Frank Baker passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 8 after a long battle with cancer. He was 76. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jess Thompson Andrews, three children, four stepchildren and their partners as well as 11 grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by friends across the globe.
Born July 3, 1930 Frank grew up on the South side of Chicago, the only child of Frank Andrews Sr., an engineer, and homemaker Evelyn Thompson Andrews, later a school tutor. He excelled at science, math and sports, and dreamed of a career in professional baseball. After becoming state champion in backstroke, Frank won a swimming scholarship to Princeton University in 1948. He stopped out during the Korean War to serve in the Army, performing counter-espionage work in Germany. He returned to Princeton, completing his B.S. in 1956 and went on to the University of Chicago's Medical School under the G.I. bill. There he met and married Phoebe Torrance. Their son Robert Torrance (Torre) was born in 1960, the year of Frank's graduation. The young family moved to the Presidio in San Francisco for Frank's internship followed by Tripler in Honolulu for his residency in radiology. Daughter Evelyn Adrienne arrived there in 1961 followed by the birth of daughter Jocelyn Jean in 1963 at Walter Reed in DC. Frank also served at bases in Fort Eustis, VA and Chinon, France (where he was hospital director) and Nuremberg, Germany before leaving the army in 1967. His first marriage also ended at this time. He pursued a fellowship in angiography in Chicago and introduced the procedure at the South Coast Medical Center in Laguna Beach where he joined the radiology staff in 1968. He served on the board there and also worked at Saddleback hospital as well as at private clinic. He left those practices in 1983 to found the Breast Clinic for Early Diagnosis in Mission Viejo, the first dedicated breast-imaging center in south Orange County with the most advanced equipment available at that time. He was a leader in women's health care. He sold the practice to South Coast in 1986 but continued on as medical director, gradually reducing his work time until his complete retirement in 2000. In 1988 he reconnected with his early love, Jess Thompson Spurgin, then single after a long marriage. They married in December 1988, attended by his three children, Torre Andrews of Seattle, Wa. Evelyn Andrews of Sunnyvale, CA and Jocelyn Andrews of San Diego, CA and Jess's four children, Sarah Spurgin Urness (Witte) of New York, Richard Spurgin of Amherst, MA, Margaret Spurgin (Barnes) of St. Paul, MN and William Spurgin of Chicago. The family has since grown to include the children's partners, Dawn Bova, Fred Wiesinger, Breck Witte, Diana Rogers, Gary Barnes, and Linda Butterfield. His grandchildren are Richard, Jane, Ivan, Caroline, Kate, Sarah Grace, Trevor, Kira, Elsa, Eva, and Brooke. Frank kept in touch with friends from all periods of his life and career. He played golf avidly and tennis almost daily until his illness. He and Jess have lived in the lovely community of San Juan Capistrano, CA since 1990. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 428 Park Ave., Laguna Beach, CA on Saturday, August 12th at 3:00 p.m.
