Erna Rita Schurr of Eustis passed away December 31, 2016 at Elwood Care Center. Erna was born in May of 1920 at Eustis, Nebraska to Louis G. and Rosine (Scholl) Gall on their farm south of Eustis. She attended school at Eustis and graduated with the class of 1938. On April 16, 1946, she married Martin T. Schurr at the Eustis United Methodist Church. The couple were blessed with eight children. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Eustis, Nebraska, Mary Martha Circle and U & I Extension Club. Erna was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Caring for her family was especially important to Erna. She spent many hours sewing quilt tops which were donated to church missions. She was well versed in family and community history. She enjoyed visits with family and neighbors, maintaining a garden large enough to feed her family even after they left home, and playing board games with children and grandchildren. Erna enjoyed music, was a talented piano player who enjoyed playing piano duets and singing. She enjoyed traveling, taking note of everything along the way and refusing to sleep, just in case she might miss something. She was also a life long avid reader. Erna spent the last three years of her life at the Elwood Care Center. She organized evening and weekend scrabble and other board games with any interested resident and occasionally played the piano at the care center. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Survivors include her children, Larry Schurr, Stanley (Cindy) Schurr and David Schurr all of Eustis; Beverly (Ken) Sherrets of Grove OK, Susan (Dallas) Whitford of Lincoln, Jeanne (Dan) Hoselton of Juniata, Marian (Mike) Feddersen of Oconto and Vivian (Ken) Carriker of Culbertson; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Services will be Friday, January 6, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Eustis with Kathy Gundell, PMA officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell. Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad is in charge of the arrangements.
