Funeral service for Martha L. (Fried) Ackerman, 90, of Eureka will be 10:00 am, Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Eureka Reformed Church. The Rev. James Grossmann will officiate.

Burial will be at 2:00 pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

Martha died December 11, 2016 at Avera Eureka Health Care Center.

Martha L. Rieger, daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth (Schneider) Rieger was born June 4, 1926 at Wakpala, SD. She grew up near Hillsview, SD. As a young woman she worked at the Eureka Nursing Home.

She was united in marriage to Carl Fried on July 30, 1944 in Congregational Church in Eureka. She made her home on the Fried farm with her in-laws while Carl was in the Army. After he returned to Eureka they farmed on a farm west of Artas, SD. They were farm workers in the Dakota midland area. In 1963, their family moved to Aberdeen. Martha worked at Dakota Locker Plant and Econo Foods and babysat in her home for many children. Carl died October 4, 1976.

She was united in marriage to Reuben Ackerman on December 17, 1977 at First Reformed Church in Aberdeen. They lived in Aberdeen until August of 2005 when they moved to Eureka. Reuben died October 31, 2008. Martha moved into the nursing home in October of 2010.

Martha enjoyed gardening, crocheting, playing cards, jigsaw puzzles and word find puzzles. Her family will always remember her making homemade noodles and wonderful German food. Martha had a true heart for genuine hospitality. She also loved to travel. She was a member of Eureka Reformed Church, American Legion Auxiliary and a Gold Star Mother and VFW Auxiliary.

Grateful for having shared Martha’s life are her children, Janet (Robert) Graf, Larry (Melanie) Fried, Phyllis McClain and Pamela (Larry) Ottenbacher; daughter-in-law, Dixie Fried; sisters, Alma Ottenbacher and Viola Benting; sisters-in-law, Idella Fried, Kathy Dahlin and Audrey Schnabel, 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Elizabeth Rieger, both husbands, Carl Fried and Reuben Ackerman, two sons, Vern and Dennis Fried, one son-in-law, Keiser McClain, one grandson, Lee Graf, two great-grandsons, Cody Seelye and Wesley Fried, five brothers, Albert, August, Milton, Richard and Marvin Rieger and three sisters, Gertrude Goehring, Leona McDonald and Delores Paulson.
