Wallace E. "Bob" Marshall
McCloud, CA 10-29-1918 ---- 12-25-2016
Born Oct. 29, 1918 in Portland OR., raised on a small farm near Dorris CA., without electricity or running water, Bob loved animals and school. His Father once acquired a retired rodeo horse that would occasionally buck him off on the five mile journey to his one room school house. That school house is at the Siskiyou County Museum now. Bob taught himself to play the violin and guitar, and performed at local barn dances in his youth. Doing what he could through the lean years during and after the Great Depression, he discovered one of his greatest passions - working in the woods for the U.S. Forest Service. Bob had registered for the draft days before Pearl Harbor and joined the service the week after. Bob was in the 1st Special Brigade, Combined Operations. Meaning, he was on a landing craft day one, at the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Normandy.
In 1946, Bob married his first wife Renda, and finally got a full time position in the Forest Service. They had two children together, Robert and Michael. They moved to Dunsmuir in 1955, where Bob was also a Volunteer Dunsmuir Fireman for over 30 years. Bob had a great career with the Forest Service, doing a great job at what he loved, from building bridges and roads in the Shasta Trinity Forest, to fighting forest fires all around the Western United States. One of his last jobs was working on the Pacific Crest Trail through Castle Crags where he would hike 10-12 miles a day through the mountains. Bob reluctantly retired in 1983 when he was 65. His first wife Renda passed away in 1993. Bob was active in V.F.W. and American Legion. He tried to make every Forest Service retirement event possible.
In 1994, Bob and a widowed friend met for lunch at the urging of some mutual best friends. This would lead to some of the best years of his life. After a brief courtship, he married Louise McArron of McCloud in 1994. Bob moved to McCloud with Louise. They traveled extensively around the U.S., and to Australia. They were a perfect couple. After battling prostate cancer for 4 years, Bob passed away on Christmas Day. Bob was a humble, strong, intelligent man. He had a great sense of humor, tolerance, and a work ethic second to none. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Bob leaves behind his wife Louise, a son, daughters in law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, step sons, step daughters, step grandchildren, and step great grandchildren. We all have a deeper love and appreciation of the outdoors because of him. The family would like to thank all the loving friends, neighbors, and Hospice for their help and support through Bob's last weeks.
There will be a celebration of Bob's life in 2017 when the weather is better.
