Saltillo- David Wayne Blackwood, 70, passed away Thursday, January 05, 2017 at his home. He was born August 07, 1946 to the late William and Maxine Blackwood of Oneonta, AL.

He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969 where he was also a chef. He later worked many years in construction with his father-in-law, He served 22 years in law enforcement, starting with the Saltillo Police Dept. for 2 years 1980-1982. He then went to be a deputy sheriff at the Lee County Sheriffs Dept. for 5 years from 1982-1987. He ran for chief of police in Saltillo in 1987 and he remained there as chief for 15 years. He was elected 4 times from 1987-2002. He was also the vice president of the Lee County Vice Narcotics task force which he helped organize throughout his career. He retired in 2002 due to health conditions.

Funeral services will be held at Waters Funeral Home, Sunday, January 08, 2017 at 2:00 P.M with Bro. David Singleton officiating. Burial in the Saltillo City Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, one daughter, (2) granddaughters; grandson, (3) great-grandchildren, (4) brothers, 1 sister; host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parent; sister, Elaine McCurdy; brothers, Daniel “Bud” Blackwood, Billy Blackwood, Marlon Blackwood and Steven Blackwood.

His nephews will serve as his pallbearers.

Visitation will be Sunday from noon until service time at the funeral home.
