Walter S. Kofoid, Jr., 87, of Marseilles passed away Thursday January 5, 2017 at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 10, at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home with Rev. Anthony Ego of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Leonore.

Walt was born December 23, 1929 in LaSalle to Walter T. and Ruth (Halterman) Kofoid. On February 2, 1952, he married Joan McLaughlin of Troy Grove who survives. Walt had said “The Gopher married the Weasel on Ground Hog’s Day.” They would have celebrated 65 years this year.

Walt was a retired ironworker of local 386, an avid gardener, and took tremendous pride in his garden. He was a small engine repair mechanic and owned and operated Walt’s Small Engine Repair for many years. He is also a former member of the Marseilles Lion’s Club. Walt was raised and farmed many years in Waltham Township.

Walt is survived by his wife, Joan; eight children, Christine (Emil) Crouch of Ottawa, Larry (Joslyn, deceased) Kofoid of Berea, KY, Dennis (Kim) Kofoid of Marseilles, Jean (Miles) Kleckner of Marseilles, Marcia (Bill) Hall of Ottawa, Ronald (Jen) Kofoid of Littleton, CO, Greg Kofoid of Marseilles, and Ann (Mark) Smith of Marseilles; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald (June) Kofoid of Mendota; and two sisters, Doris (Howard, deceased) Blythe of Wyanet, and Patricia (Gerald) Waszkowiak of LaSalle..

He was preceded in death by his parents; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
