Young Della Hale, one of six children borne from the union of Michael and Jemima (McKinley) Hale, contracted Cholera while the family was on the long and difficult journey to the Oregon Territory in 1852. 1852 was known for the highest death rate of both emigrants and animals on the Oregon Trail, per Stephanie Flora's website, oregonpioneers.com . Young Della and her mother were most likely buried in unmarked graves to prevent desecration by both wild animals and humans. It is believed that both died while the extended family was crossing the Plains.
