Obituary:

Emery W. Young Sr., 76 of Westerly, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 23, at The Westerly Hospital.

Mr. Young was born Oct. 31, 1930, in Indianapolis, IN, the son of Emery Lee and Clara Elizabeth (Hackler) Young

Emery is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Florence Marie (Fritz) Young; his four children, Kathryn Marie (Young) Shaw of Dale City, VA, Emery W. Young Jr.; of Colechester, CN, Kurt Joseph Young of Bozarah, CN, and Patricia Lee (Young) Bodiford, of Fort Campbell, KY; nine grandchildren, David Theodore and Eric Joseph Shaw; Amelia Marie and Emery William Young III; Kurt Joseph Jr., and Kyle Christopher Young; and Stephanie Nicole, Jessie Sally, and Joseph Benjamin Bodiford.
He has one great granddaughter, Natalie Michaela Shaw, daughter of David and Jennifer Shaw. Emery has four sisters, Betty Jean Wesley of Toledo, OH, Peggy Amos, Mary Ellen Ingalls and Sue Carol Underbrink of Indianapolis; and two brothers, Robert D. of McMinnville, OR and Lester Thomas of Ellicott City, MD; a goddaughter, Debra Louis Collins; his daughters-in-law, Jean (Orkney) and Donna (Carl) Young; sons-in-law, Kevin M. Shaw and Benjamin F. Bodiford; his sisters-in-law, Jessie and Beverly Young and Patricia L.S. Collins; brother-in-law James B. Collins; and 30 nieces and nephews.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1948 and retired as a lieutenant in 1974. During this time he served in five submarines, four submarine tenders and several shore duty stations performing various weaponry related assignments. He retired as the weapons officer at the U.S. Submarine Support Facility, Groton, CN. From 1976 to 1992, he was employed by Vitro Corporation as a training specialist and system engineer where he developed the quality control manual for the maintenance of Mark-48 torpedoes for the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Young was a member of the Submarine Veterans Association and inducted into the Holland Club. He is a Past Master of Franklin Lodge No. 20, F&A.M; a 32nd-degree Mason; a member of the Rhode Island Shrine and Legion of Honor. He is Past Patron and present Worthy Patron of Deborah Chapter No. 9, O.E.S. and a Past Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of RI, O.E.S., and served several years as chairman and board member for the Westerly Assembly, Order of the Rainbow for Girls. While stationed in Hawaii, for several years, he was the Pearl Harbor Naval Base sponsored Boy Scout Troup.

Emery enjoyed traveling, golfing, fishing, going to baseball games with his family, spending time with his grandchildren and telling sea stories.
