Bertha's husband was August B Pieper. He was initially a military man in the Prussian Army. Later he became mayor of Carwitz, Prussia. While August B. was consumed with mayoral duties, Bertha looked over the secular and sacred education of her children. Bertha was raised from the age of three by her uncle, a member of the confessional Pomeranian Separation. She held true to her confessional Lutheran faith throughout her life and imparted these teachings upon her children. Under the steady, loving guide of Bertha, his sons became well-educated and their visible talents spoke well of both their mother and father. [Excerpts from a biography of son August O Pieper by Aaron Voss].
Bertha's husband, August B. Pieper, died in 1869, and a year later Bertha took the four younger sons over to America. The Pieper family settled in Watertown, Wisconsin, near the Rock River bridge because of the proximity to Northwestern College.
Four of August and Bertha's sons became called ministers of the gospel: Reinhold was a professor at the Missouri Synod seminary in Springfield, IL; Franz was a professor and college president at Concordia, St Louis and president of the Missouri Synod; August was a professor at the Wisconsin Synod seminary in Thiensville, WI; and Anton was a pastor in the Wisconsin Synod.
At the time of Bertha's death, son Anton B Pieper was serving as pastor at St John's Ev Church, Newtonburg. Pastor Anton's 4 children were born during his time at St.John's.
