(Abstracted)
"LAWYER, JOHN W. (deceased), who settled in Sangamon County in 1850, was well known in Mechanicsburg Township, where he carried on farming for a quarter of a century."

Veteran of Civil War, enlisting Aug 1861 in Co. A, 28 (sic) IL Inf. Discharged for disability, sick for some time after his return home.

Born 1825* Ohio, son of Benjamin Lawyer a native of Ohio. Both parents died on a farm.

Farmed in Mechanicsburg Township until his death in 1875. Member of Methodist Church, Democrat in politics. Had a reputation for uprightness and integrity.

* m1. in Ohio to Bessie Sinneth, native of OH; 4 children all of whom are deceased and mother died soon after coming to Illinois. Note this could be John Lawyer m.14 May 1843 Perry Co., OH, to Elizabeth Sanft. There were Sinneth/Cinneth and other variations in this county.
* m2. Taylorville, IL, to Miss Nancy Davis a native of Christian County; 2 children both deceased.
* m3. Martha M. Blue born Apr 1830* Paris, IL; her father a native of Indiana and an early settler in Mechanicsburg. John and Martha had six children, 5 daughters (?) and one son. The only survivor is William H., a contracting painter and decorator living in Mechanicsburg. Mrs. Lawyer is 81 years old, a member of the Christian Church and retains a keen interest in affairs and events.

John N. (sic) Lawyer m.22 Dec 1857 Sangamon Co., IL, to Patsey Maria Bleu (sic).
Her birth year is usually mid-1830's on censuses except the 1860 census where she is 16 yrs old. Patsy M. Blue was 8 years old on the 1850 census in her parents' household. Martha's censuses identify three sons and one daughter.

John's age was 38 yrs on the 1860 census and 43 yrs at his enlistment in 1861. Not found on 1870 census.
