Johnny was born in Leavenworth, Kansas on March 21, 1925. He was the son of John Fredrick Vossmer and Agnes Josephine Kostelnik who have both preceded him in death. The family home on south 4th street, where Johnny grew up, was full, shared by one set of grandparents and his two older brothers, James Vossmer and Eugene Vossmer (both deceased). Johnny led a typical boys life for that era including odd jobs, when available, mischief and school activities including basketball, boxing and R.O.T.C. until his graduation from Immaculate High School in 1943. Johnny enlisted along with most of his class in the spring of 1943 and spent the summer after graduation being integrated into the various branches of the armed services. Johnny volunteered for the Army Air Corps and was trained as a ball turret gunner on the consolidated B-24 ‘Liberator’ 4- engine bomber. After meeting and being merged with a crew, he participated in the strategic bombing initiative to liberate Europe. The crew arrived in Tibenham, England in November of 1944 and completed 35 missions over occupied Europe as a part of the 445th Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force. After his service in World War II, Johnny attended Rockhurst College and worked for the trucking company, Pacific Intermountain Express (PIE). Then settled into his permanent career as an aircraft router with Trans World Airlines (TWA) from 1955 until his retirement in 1986. His marriage to Dolores Aaron Vossmer of Leavenworth on September 5, 1953 had provided the impetus for a permanent career. He was devoted to his family, providing his children with multiple extracurricular opportunities through his volunteer work as an adult leader in various youth activities. Johnny maintained a life-long interest in sports which he passed along to his children through his coaching of a multitude of youth sports teams. One of his more amazing accomplishments was the way he and Dolores maintained a stable home base for the family in Leavenworth despite his re-location by TWA to the New Jersey/ New York area. From the early 70’s to his retirement, Johnny commuted by air from New York to attend and participate in most family activities her in the Leavenworth area. This sacrifice allowed his family the continued benefits of a small town life-style. Dolores preceded Johnnie on the final journey in October of 2015.
