Dorothy Mary (Chambers) Davis was born on September 4, 1921 in Buckingham County in Arvonia Virginia, to the late Thomas and Eliza (Woodson) Chambers. On October 15, 2016 God called his precious jewel home. Dorothy was the second oldest of eight children.
Dorothy met and married Exodus Davis who accepted her three children as his own. Dorothy was a homemaker and also did domestic work in people’s homes.
Dorothy accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age. Dorothy was a member of Spreading Oak Baptist Church in Buckingham County in Arvonia Virginia. Dorothy later joined Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Harvey E. Pasley. Dorothy served on various ministries. She was supervisor of the Young Adult Choir, the Youth Ensemble and the Junior and Youth Choir. She also served for many, many years as supervisor of the Youth Fellowship Ministry. Mother Davis was the best supervisor any member could ask for; strict but loving and caring! Dorothy was a faithful member of the Women’s Ministry and the Willing Workers’ Ministry where she helped out wherever she could as long as her health endured. She was also a member of the Combined Choir, where she served under Benny Cummings. She loved her Senior Choir where she lead “Somebody’s Knocking at Your Door”.
Dorothy’s passion in the church was serving in the kitchen. She always had things in order and kept the peace. Dorothy was a great cook and she enjoyed watching her family eat. Boy could she make some fried chicken, sweet potatoes and that lemon cake that had at least 3 layers. Dorothy knew when it was time to give up her position, her robe and her apron. She trained so many of the young people in Morning Star because she knew that “the baton, one day had to be passed on”. She was a “Mother Figure” to so many people.
Dorothy always put her family first. She made sure her family was taken care of. No matter how she felt, Dorothy always had strong words of wisdom and encouragement. Her favorite words were “I am being blessed because God has been good to me” and her last words were “When the Lord is Ready”.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Thomas and mother, Eliza, her brothers: Clarence, Lewis, Willard and Tommy Chambers. Her three children: Anna Betts, Eugene Chambers and Joseph Chambers; her grandson: Kareem Chambers and the cousin she raised, Mary Lou Brown.
She leaves to mourn her three sisters: Agnes Clark, Gertrude Johnson and Winnie Weddington; her son-in-law, Melvin Betts; daughter-in-law, Paula Chambers; her eleven grand children: Eugene (Stephanie) Chambers II, Stephanie (Paul) Caraballo, Crystal (William) Smith, Samuel Chambers, Monique Chambers, Kevin Chambers, Lauren Chambers, Jobar Chambers, Michelle Chambers, Michael Chambers and Shavon Betts. Twenty-five great grandchildren and 17 great, great grand-children, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
