VET Frank J. Barra, 89, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017.

Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with Father John Valdez as celebrant. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St.

Frank was born Aug. 14, 1927, in Wilburton, Okla., to Frank and Agnes Barra. He graduated from Wilburton High School in 1944 and obtained his undergraduate degree from Eastern Oklahoma A&M in Wilburton from 1944 to 1945 and 1946 to 1948. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1945 to 1946. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1949. He worked as a professional engineer for Black, Sivalls & Bryson Inc. in Oklahoma City until February 1973, when he moved to Houston and worked for Smith Industries Inc. In 1981, he moved and went to work for Mesa Petroleum Co. in Amarillo as the division mechanical engineer responsible for overall engineering of the oil and gas process equipment for Gulf Coast Division, where he retired. He was a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a registered professional engineer in the state of Oklahoma. He was also an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus. After retirement, he served Widowed Persons Services of Amarillo as an officer and member for many years. He was a longtime member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. In September 2016, he moved to Asheboro, N.C., with his daughter, Lydia, and son-in-law, Wayne, where he passed away at Randolph Hospice House on Jan. 4, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine D. Barra; a daughter, Victoria Lynn Adams; and his parents, Frank and Agnes Barra.

Survivors include a son, Steven M. Barra of Richmond; a daughter, Lydia B. Shiver and husband Wayne of Asheboro, N.C.; five grandchildren, Aaron B. Haughey of Oklahoma City, Zachary M. Barra and wife Lindsey of Cypress, Johnathan C. Barra of Houston, Neeley Berry of Somerset, Wis., and Brandi Williams of Brandon, Miss.; and eight great-grandchildren, Tristan Jackson, Alexandra Haughey and Ashleigh Haughey, all of Amarillo, Chance Haughey of Alvin, Jake Haughey of Oklahoma City, Devan Barra and Logan Barra, both of Cypress, and Derrick Berry and Hayden Berry, both of Somerset.
