James Monroe Nevels was born on March 5, 1857 in Jefferson County, Mississippi.
He married Sarah Jane Frisby there on June 4, 1877. After moving to Union County, Arkansas, he was one of the petitioners involved in the original incorporation of the town of Victoria, Arkansas, later called Strong. He was killed in a devastating tornado which hit Strong on the afternoon of May 9, 1927. One of his daughters, Ether, was a teacher in the public schools at Strong

Mr. Nevels and his wife, Sarah Jane, lived at the corner of Third and Willow, in a house later owned by Homer and Odell Dozier. Nevels owned and operated a feed store somewhere in Strong, location remains unknown.

Further research reveals that the Nevel's Feed Store was located fronting Coleman Avenue (U. S. Highway 82) in downtown Strong. It was about where Harper's Grocery was located later on. Mr. Nevel's was there late in the afternoon of May 9, 1927 when the devastating tornado swept through Strong. He perished in the storm.
