Born in Chapeltown, Sheffield, England. His father, Mather Howard Burnham (1870-1917), was a spy for France during World War 1 who died of TB when Tom was 11 years of age. His mother was Constance Chambers Newton (1874-1976), heiress to Newton-Chambers. Graduated military school in Pasadena, California, while living with his Uncle, the celebrated scout, Major Frederick Russell Burnham, DSO. Lived in England, California, New Zealand, Florida. Married at least 3 times, but no children.
