US Congressman. After attending the Connecticut Literary Institute in Suffield, he studied law and became an attorney in New York City in 1851. Pelton was active in local politics and civic affairs throughout his life. In 1854 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as an Opposition Party candidate and served one term, 1855 to 1857. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1856 and returned to his law practice, living in both New York City and Great Barrington. Pelton became a Republican during the Civil War and was a Delegate from New York City to numerous state and national conventions. In 1885 he was active on a local civic committee that successfully advocated locating Ulysses Grant's burial place in New York City. In the late 1880s he served as a member of New York City's Cable Railroad Commission. Pelton died on vacation while climbing Mary's Mountain in Yellowstone National Park.
