Thelma Kamala “Sookie” Ahuna Espinda, 93, of Honolulu, a retired social worker with the state of Hawaii, Department of Education, died at Straub Clinic and Hospital. She was born in Honolulu Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Espinda Sr.
She is survived by sons, Alfred “Eki” Espinda, Jr, Herbert (Marie) Espinda, and daughter, Kaleinani (Walter) Larsen; sisters, Nickie Hines, Mary Peters and brother, Herman Awai, sister-in-law, Mary Quinlan; 9 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Thelma retired in 1976 and continued her community involvement as a docent at Washington Place for Governors’ John Waihee and Ben Caytano. Her life reflected the spirit of aloha, helping others with her friendly and
kindly expressions of caring. All who knew her came to respect and love her special ways. Her presence was a legacy of “living aloha” everyday.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, April 15, 2011, at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. Memorial Services at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Hawaiian Memorial Cemetery Park. Aloha attire.
