Published in The Sierra Vista Herald (January 20, 2017):
James Ray O'Donogue, age 70, a 31-year resident of Sierra Vista passed away, surrounded by love, on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, in Phoenix, AZ.
He was born June 19, 1946, in Kankakee, IL, to Patrick and Frances O'Donogue.
James is survived by his beloved soulmate of 49 years, Carol O'Donogue.
Jim proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 to 1975 and completed two tours in Vietnam. While serving his country, destiny brought James to Carol, where she was hooked with a simple wink of an eye. Together they went on many adventures, never passing up an historical marker, and always taking the scenic route. Oh, the photos we have. Jim's greatest life achievement (aside from his bride), are his four daughters, his "bevy of beauties." Countless adventures were had, and so many memories were made. We have been told by many that they've never seen a man who was loved as much as our dad. We feel we could not have been more loved by him.
After an honorable discharge from the USMC, Jim enjoyed life as a professional salesman. Jim's passion was his service at the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He loved helping others. He was a proud 4th degree Knight of Columbus, and also a past Grand Knight. He was a lector at St. Andrew's Church for over 25 years. He loved God, his family, and the Corps.
Jim had many hobbies. He loved shooting and rock hounding with his beloved friend Greg. Jim was a rifle expert. Jim adored birding with Carol, playing cribbage with his girls and his friends, playing pool, and stopping for lunch at the TTT with his bride to "listen to the truckers cuss."
To state it simply, Jim loved his family. He is survived by Carol Marie O'Donogue (his lovely bride), Jennifer O'Donogue-Rhodes (Shawn), Kathleen Pence-Tucker (Geoffrey), Kimberly O'Donogue-Chavez (Frank), and Teresa O'Donogue-Lowell (Robert). He has 6 grandchildren, Geneva (Butterball), Cody, Franky (Moose), Ruth Ann, Shelby Rosebud, and James Ray. Jim has 1 sister, Mindy Press, and 3 honorary sisters, Melanie, Nancy, and Carol. One of Jim's happiest moments of 2016 was meeting his biological family after searching for 69 years. They welcomed each other with open arms. To Jim, everyone was family.
Our family would like to say a special thank you to 4 of Jim's doctors who took exceptional care of him. Dr. Divya Kapoor, Dr. Vasanta Weiss, Dr. Wilber Su, and Dr. Divya Verma. Your compassion and guidance will never be forgotten. We would also like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff who treated him as if he were their own. Thank you all for taking such wonderful care of him.
Jim was blessed and loved by all.
